When a massive star runs out of fuel, it collapses in a supernova so violent the core gets crushed beyond imagination. What survives is a neutron star: more mass than our entire Sun, squeezed into a sphere roughly 20 kilometres across — about the width of a city. The gravity at its surface is billions of times stronger than what holds you to the ground right now. Some of these objects spin hundreds of times every second, sweeping beams of radiation across the cosmos like a lighthouse. We call those pulsars.
