The Observable Universe Is 93 Billion Light-Years Across — But It's Only 13.8 Billion Years Old

The universe is younger than it is wide. Much younger.

The universe is about 13.8 billion years old. So you'd expect the furthest light we could ever see to be 13.8 billion light-years away. Except the observable universe is roughly 93 billion light-years across. That number is not a typo.

Here's what's actually happening. Space itself has been expanding the whole time — not galaxies flying outwards through space, but the fabric of space stretching between them. The most distant light reaching us now left its source when the universe was extraordinarily young. In the billions of years that light spent travelling towards us, the space behind it kept stretching, carrying that source far, far further away.

The observable universe is just the part we can see. The whole thing could be far larger — possibly infinite.
