The universe is younger than it is wide — work that out.

The universe is about 13.8 billion years old. So you'd expect nothing we can see to be more than 13.8 billion light-years away — light simply wouldn't have had time to reach us. Yet the observable universe stretches roughly 93 billion light-years across. That gap isn't a mistake. Space itself has been expanding the whole time, carrying distant matter outwards faster than light can chase it. The ancient light we detect today left its source when the universe was very young — and the object that released it has since been carried billions of light-years further away. What we see is a snapshot of a place that no longer exists where we think it does. And the observable universe is just the part we can reach with light.
